Do not lay up for yourselves
treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and
steal…for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. _Matthew 6:19-21
The
things that we hold onto are the ones that we consider to be treasure. These
things are important to us. Like the child that cries for the thing they
consider theirs, we have a tendency to hold on to certain things; Money, cars,
are only a few of the more common treasures among many men. Not limited to
these, others include education, approval from people, our reputation, marriage
or even friends.
Here
are some facts:
1.
Everyone has something they consider a treasure. Treasures by themselves are
not evil but the way we view them can become a snare. The one ultimate treasure
in my life is God and His Word; by Him, we breathe and live.
2.
God is not against treasures.
But if anyone does not provide
for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the
faith… _1st Timothy 5:8
He
is not against possessions. But if finances increase before my heart increases,
I am in danger of destruction. Psalm 62:10. It is
what we set our hearts on that becomes our treasure and to a wrong treasure, a
man can become a slave thereto.
There
are two (2) kinds of treasures (Matthew
6:19, earthly treasures and heavenly treasures. The former fade
away and can be stolen from us, the latter lasting forever. It is evident to me
what my preferred treasure is, the heavenly kind.
My
heart always follows my treasure, never the other way round, so I choose now
what my treasure will be, heavenly. Earthly treasures zap liveliness out of us
and any spiritual weariness can mean that I am out treasuring the wrong things.
Apart
from the heavenly treasure that will not pass away, the Words of God shall not
pass away either. The man that does the will of God also abides forever, oh
that I may be this man! 1 John 2:17.
Heaven and earth will pass
away, but My words will by no means pass away. _Matthew 24:35
The
Word of God is Treasure so we evangelize this Word and live by it for all men
to come to know and do the will of God. So where is your treasure, saint? What
is your heart following?
